Before you buy
Questions
- What exactly am I buying?
- A giclée print on canvas, stretched on a 38 mm bar with mirror-wrapped edges, made to order by our print lab: the Gallery canvas at 30 × 45 in for $1,800, or the Salon canvas at 40 × 60 in for $3,200. Both are numbered to 25. The paper proof is a 24 × 36 in print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag for $650, an open edition and unnumbered.
- How sharp is it at that size?
- Each picture is rebuilt into a print master of 8,000 by 12,000 pixels before it goes to the lab. That is 266 dots per inch on the Gallery canvas, 200 on the Salon canvas and 333 on the paper proof. We never offer a size the master cannot print at 100 or better.
- Is there a larger canvas?
- Not yet. Our lab does not make a stretched canvas at 48 × 72 in, so the Salon canvas at 40 × 60 in is the largest we sell. We will not invent a size we cannot have made.
- What does numbered mean here?
- Each piece is an edition of 25 canvases. Numbers are given in the order payments clear, written on your receipt and the packing note, and entered on the public ledger without your name. When all 25 numbers are taken or retired the piece closes and checkout refuses it. A refunded number is struck on the ledger as retired and never sold again, so an edition can close at fewer than 25. An edition of 25 is a count of canvases and promises nothing about a price.
- Is it painted by hand, or signed?
- No. The pictures are made in our studio with an image model, checked by eye against a character bible we wrote, and the canvas is printed by the lab. Nobody paints, finishes or signs it by hand, and we will never describe it that way.
- Can it come framed?
- Not yet. Every canvas arrives stretched and ready for a frame of your choosing. We will add a float frame when we can price it properly.
- Where do you ship, and what does it cost?
- Within the United States only, and shipping is included in the price. We send tracking when the lab ships your canvas. Orders from elsewhere are not open yet; write to us and we will tell you when they are.
- What can I write on a Family Board?
- Up to twelve squares, each up to 28 characters: Latin letters (with their accents), Greek letters, numbers, spaces and the marks & ' . -. Fraternity and sorority boards can be set in Greek; the board’s typeface carries the full Greek alphabet. A Family Board costs the canvas price plus $600, and it is numbered on its own, outside the edition of 25.
- What if my word is too long?
- The studio tells you before you pay. Every word must stand at least 6.0 mm tall in capitals on the 30 × 45 in canvas, so it can be read across a room; a word that would be smaller is refused, with the size it would have printed at and roughly how many characters fit. Shorter words, or a break at a space, usually solve it.
- Can I add our crest or a logo?
- No. We print words, never logos, crests or images. By ordering, you confirm the words are yours to print and that they do not name anyone who has not agreed to be on your board. Full terms are on the terms page.
- I spelled a square wrong. Can I change it?
- Write to support@painted.app at once with your order number. If the lab has not started your board we will correct it at no cost; once it has, the canvas is printed as you typed it.
- Is this an investment?
- No. We sell pictures to hang. We make no claim about what an edition will be worth later, and you should not buy one expecting a return.
- Who are the heirs?
- Invented characters. Fordham Fairweather IV, the twins, the girl with three surnames and the boy with the racehorse are not real children and are not drawn from any.
